Guardian Scholars Program (GSP)

Supporting Foster Youth at Santa Ana College

The Guardian Scholars Program (GSP) at Santa Ana College provides holistic, student-centered support for current and former foster youth, empowering them to thrive academically, personally, and professionally.

While GSP is funded through a combination of NextUP categorical funds, philanthropic contributions, and YESS–Independent Living Program (ILP) support, all services are unified under the GSP name and mission. Strategic collaboration with campus and community partners enhances our collective impact and ensures foster youth receive the tools and resources needed for success.

GSP serves Transitional Age Youth (TAY) and older foster youth by offering a comprehensive range of services aimed at fostering academic achievement, promoting self-sufficiency, and preparing students for meaningful career and life transitions.

At Santa Ana College, the Guardian Scholars Program (GSP) embodies the college’s mission to “inspire, transform, and empower a diverse community of learners” by advancing educational equity for current and former foster youth.

Guided by a trauma-informed and student-centered approach, GSP supports students through:

• Equitable access to higher education and wraparound services

• Specialized support in academic counseling, tutoring, financial aid (including Chafee Grant assistance), textbook support, and priority registration.

• ILP workshops focused on life skills, career readiness, and independent living.

• Mentorship and community-building to foster resilience and connection.

Aligned with the mission of the Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD), GSP works collaboratively with college, district, and community partners to:

• Increase access to student services and academic support.

• Improve academic performance, retention, and completion outcomes.

• Remove barriers and eliminate equity gaps for foster youth.

• Promote long-term self-sufficiency and community engagement.
