You need to live in the United States for 5 years to apply for citizenship. If you are married to a U.S. citizen, you are eligible to apply after only 3 years. If you have been a resident for 3 years and married to a U.S. citizen, you are eligible to apply. Click the link below to test if you are eligible.
A naturalized citizen, is a citizen born outside the United States. You take the naturalization
exam and interview to become a citizen.
You do not need to be a fluent English speaker to pass the exam. If you can speak
English and prepare in advance, you can pass the exam.
You need to show that you can read, write and speak English at a basic level. You
must have a basic knowledge of U.S. History and government. You will be asked questions
about your application by an USCIS officer. It is important that you understand the
language on the form. You might need to answer questions about the information you
provided on the form.
You will have two attempts to take the English and civics tests. Answer all questions
about your application in English. If you fail any of the tests at your initial interview,
don't worry. You can retake the portion of the test that you failed (English or civics).
This will be between 60 and 90 days from the date of your initial interview.
