Welcome to the Department of Ethnic Studies

The Department of Ethnic Studies examines the social and historical narratives of those seen as non-American. The Anglo, Caucasian, and WASP ideal of America created a separation where all others encountered and endured the United States nation-building project, which erased the narratives of non-Americans. The department's educational principles aspire to expand students' social and political horizons and the critical thinking skills vital in comprehensively participating in humanity transnationally.

Ethnic Studies Associate of Arts

Students studying for an Ethnic Studies degree study the social, cultural, political, economic, and historical narrative of communities of color in the United States to critically analyze issues distinct to race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, religion, spirituality, national origin, immigration status, ability, and/or age while developing a consciousness of the cultural pluralism in American society.

Chicano/Chicana Studies Associate of Arts

This Associate in Arts Degree is designed to acquaint students with the most significant social, political, economic, and historical aspects of the Chicana/Chicano/Chican@/Chicanx/Xicana/Xicano/Xicanx experience in the United States.

Black Studies Associate of Arts

Black Studies students will study the social, cultural, political, economic, and historical narrative of African/Black American communities in the United States to critically analyze issues distinct to race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, religion, spirituality, national origin, immigration status, ability, and/or age while developing a consciousness of the cultural pluralism in American society.
